Discussing multilingual learning environments in research-based teacher education

In this contribution I discuss a topical trend of multilingual learning environments research in the light of international teacher education that prepares to work with linguistically diverse learners’ groups (cf., Wernicke et al. eds., 2021). Such teacher education follows the recommendations of the European Commission (2019) that calls its member states to build language aware and multilingual pedagogies and embrace a holistic approach to the diverse literacy practices of learners.

Based on a narrative review of 161 papers (Szabó and Brown 2023), I first outline a theoretical framework of learning environment research from a linguistic landscape approach. This framework demonstrates how the concept of schoolscape, i.e., the linguistic landscape of educational spaces, enables educators to conceptualize learning and teaching as multisensory, multimodal, materialized, embodied, spatialized and cognitively distributed (e.g., Laihonen and Szabó 2018, 2023; Malinowski, Maxim and Dubreil 2020, 2023; Krompák, Fernández-Mallat and Meyer 2022; Gorter and Cenoz 2023).

Showing practical applications of the outlined framework, I take examples from a recently developed course “Multilingual Learning Environments” (Szabó, Moate and From 2022) that helps future experts build their theoretical understanding and methodological repertoire to co-create learning environments that foster a wide range of literacy practices. This course was prepared between 2020 and 2022 by the FORTHEM Multilingualism in School and Higher Education Lab, a transnational multi-stakeholder expert network of students, academics and academia-external professionals. FORTHEM being one of the first generation European University Alliances, the lessons learned from the recent three iterations of the course shed light on several advantages and some challenges of developing and carrying out international teacher education courses in the context of the integration of the European Higher Education Area. More specifically, I draw conclusion and further avenues for research from the course work of 46 students who voluntarily participate in the follow-up study on this course. Doing so, I focus on students’ work on language educational policies fostering multilingualism.

Tamás Péter Szabó is Senior Lecturer of Multilingualism and the Internationalization of Teacher Education in the Department of Teacher Education as well as Adjunct Professor of Linguistic Landscape Studies in the Centre for Applied Language Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He teaches courses on multilingual pedagogies, translanguaging, linguistic landscapes, creativity and qualitative research methods.

In the context of FORTHEM Alliance, Tamás serves as Co-chair of the Labs and Co-creation Mission Board. Since 2019, he has been Alliance level Coordinator for FORTHEM Multilingualism in School and Higher Education Lab. He has been co-chair the Forum of European Universities (FOREU) Subgroup Multilingualism since 2020.

Tamás studies and develops multilingual pedagogies and the internationalization of teacher education, with a special regard to language ideologies and the agency of learners and teachers. He applies a linguistic landscape approach to learning environments and develops ethnographic research methods. Learners, teachers, policy makers and education developers make use of his results.

The scene is a foreign language classroom. The protagonists are the teacher, native of the target language, and the learners aged between 16 and 79, in private languages schools, having a variety of own languages with French as the most represented in the sample of 130 learners, and up to seven languages used in their everyday life.

The presentation provides empirical data collected in 2023 showing how learners think in their mostly plurilingual environment and habits, how many and which languages are present in their life, how they “live languages” inside and outside the classroom where they work on adding another language to their repertoire.

The research conducted for my PhD thesis have two pillars: questionnaires completed by the learners of Japanese, Arabic, English, Hungarian and Greek, and the ten semi-directive interviews with the teachers of the above-mentioned languages. In my presentation, I will give a summary of teachers’ experience with their own plurilingualism, in and off class, and also examples of how they see every day the multilingualism of learners, the diverse ways it manifests itself during lessons, with understandable differences related to the levels being taught.

As mentioned before, recently collected data can demonstrate the various degrees of multilingualism of the learners trying to find their ways in Brussels Babel, sometimes even within the EU bubble. The city of waffle and beer is also the city of languages, by history and by circumstances, creating a field of exploration with an unbelievable richness for the researcher.

La communication concerne la présentation de mes recherches menées pour ma thèse de doctorat. Elle se reposent sur deux piliers : des questionnaires remplis par les apprenants de japonais, d'arabe, d'anglais, de hongrois et de grec, et les dix entretiens approfondis avec les enseignants des langues susmentionnées. Dans ma présentation, je donnerai une synthèse de l'expérience des enseignants avec leur propre plurilinguisme, en et hors classe, ainsi que des exemples de la façon dont ils voient au quotidien le multilinguisme des apprenants, les diverses manières dont il se manifeste pendant les cours, avec des différences compréhensibles liées aux niveaux enseignés.

Unconscious Plurilingualisms: Practice-oriented Reflections on the European University Institute Multilingual Environment

European university language practices and policies have recently been dominated by a tension between two contradictory trends: the uncontested dominance of English as lingua franca in academic communication and research on one hand and visible impact of focused support to plurilingualism advocated by the CEFR Companion Volume on the other. General situation within the multilingual settings of universities, however, is more complex than that.

Taking the example of the European University Institute (EUI), based in Florence, Italy, this talk presents personal and contextual reflections on the EUI language policies and practices. It explores plurilingualism within the landscape of the EUI, an international research-focused academic organisation with over 1,000 staff members and students from over 85 countries of origin. The talk provides a deeper insight into four layers of the EUI multilingual environment, each considered from personal and contextual reflection perspectives. First, general linguistic characteristics of the institution will be presented. Second, the official language policy and its implementation will be described. Third, the system and scale of language and language-related training, courses and support offered to the academic and non-academic EUI staff and students will be explained and examined. And finally, informal everyday linguistic reality of the EUI community and communication will be portrayed.

The talk aims to critically discuss nuanced challenges faced by individuals and diverse dynamics faced by the institution itself within the EUI multilingual context in order to identify and generalise perspective areas where plurilingualism can or should be fostered.

Esta ponencia presenta reflexiones personales y contextuales sobre las políticas y prácticas lingüísticas y el plurilingüismo del European University Institute (EUI), una organización académica internacional, Florencia, Italia. Exploramos cuatro areas: las características lingüísticas generales de la institución; la política lingüística oficial y su implementación; el sistema de formación lingüística, cursos y apoyo ofrecidos al personal del EUI y a los estudiantes; y la realidad lingüística cotidiana de la comunidad del EUI. El objetivo es discutir críticamente la situación con el fin de identificar y generalizar áreas de perspectiva donde el plurilingüismo puede o debería ser fomentado.

Pratiques langagières scolaires au Maroc : Vers une éducation plurilingue

Le Maroc est un territoire marqué par la diversité linguistique et culturelle. Plusieurs langues et variétés cohabitent avec des statuts et des fonctions différents. Entre langues officielles, langues étrangères et variétés locales, le paysage sociolinguistique est d’une grande complexité, qui nait de l’amalgame entre le linguistique, le politique, l’économique et l’idéologique. La politique linguistique du pays soutient le multilinguisme et met en place des lois et des actions pour concrétiser cette orientation, en l’occurrence à l’école qui joue un rôle de premier plan dans le développement et la promotion d’une ou des langues.

Notre but est de tenter de répondre à la question suivante : Les pratiques langagières réelles en classe dans le contexte marocain reflètent-elles la diversité linguistique de la société ?

Ainsi, dans cette communication, nous présenterons dans un premier temps, les grands traits de la politique linguistique marocaine pour en comprendre les choix et les décisions à travers une lecture analytique des documents officiels de référence. Dans un deuxième temps, nous aborderons l’analyse des séances enregistrées de cours de français, de mathématiques, de sciences de la vie et de la terre au secondaire collégial au Maroc pour déterminer les pratiques langagières réelles (plurilingues, bilingues, monolingue) en classes et voir si elles correspondaient aux orientations promues par les documents officiels du ministère de l’éducation nationale et s’arrêter sur la conception des enseignants filmés sur le plurilinguisme et l’éducation plurilingue en classe.

Morocco is a territory characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity. Several languages and varieties coexist with different statuses and functions. Between official languages, foreign languages, and local varieties, the sociolinguistic landscape is of great complexity, arising from the amalgamation of linguistic, political, economic, and ideological factors. The country's language policy supports multilingualism and implements laws and actions to realize this orientation, particularly in schools, which play a leading role in the development and promotion of one or more languages.

Our aim is to attempt to answer the following question: Do actual language practices in classrooms in the Moroccan context reflect the linguistic diversity of society? Thus, in this presentation, we will first outline the main features of Moroccan language policy to understand the choices and decisions through an analytical reading of official reference documents. Secondly, we will address Morocco's educational language policy, aiming to study the place given to all languages circulating in the linguistic market. Finally, we recorded French, mathematics, and life sciences classes at the secondary level to determine actual language practices (multilingual, bilingual, monolingual) in classrooms and see if they corresponded to the orientations promoted by the official documents of the Ministry of National Education. We will also examine the filmed teachers' views on multilingualism and multilingual education in the classroom.

Lahoucine AIT SAGH est enseignant-chercheur de langue française à la Faculté de Langue Arabe, Université Cadi Ayyad de Marrakech. Affilié au laboratoire de recherche Linguistique et Référentiels Culturels. Titulaire d’un doctorat en langue française et didactique de la faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines d’Agadir. Il enseigne la didactique des langues et la sociolinguistique. Ses travaux de recherche s’inscrivent dans le cadre de la didactique du plurilinguisme et de la sociolinguistique. Il a publié plusieurs articles et chapitres d’ouvrage en rapport avec l’enseignement du français en français dans le contexte marocain.

Hafid KHETAB est enseignant- chercheur de communication et didactique des langues à l’Ecole Nationale du Commerce et de Gestion de l’université Ibn Zohr d’Agadir. Exploration autoethnographique et réflexive en didactique des langues étrangères sur la compétence plurilingue de l’enseignant de néerlandais/français à Bruxelles

Une prise de conscience métalinguistique comme méthode de recherche et outil d’enseignement sur mes vécu et pratique du plurilinguisme est à l’origine de la recherche doctorale que je mène. Ce projet pluridisciplinaire questionnera le rapport entre la profession d’enseignant et l’identité plurilingue de l’enseignant de langues à Bruxelles à travers une cartographie des biographies langagières. Cette recherche explore le plurilinguisme des enseignants bilingues précoces (NL-FR) à la lumière de la didactique du plurilinguisme par la verbalisation de l’expérience du plurilinguisme dans la pratique de classe.

Comment la compétence plurilingue (et pluriculturelle), la conscience (méta)linguistique et l’acquisition/apprentissage des langues influenceraient-ils les outils de l’enseignant ? En quoi l’autobiographie, le parcours de l’enseignant, le sentiment d(e)’ (in)sécurité linguistique joueraient-ils un rôle? Si le plurilinguisme et la plurilittératie des élèves font l’objet de multiples études, ces concepts sont moins étudiés pour les enseignants.

Cette communication consistera en une exploration autoethnographique et réflexive autour de mon parcours d’enseignante bilingue précoce enseignant ses deux langues et autour de la conscientisation du processus d’apprentissage/enseignement (expertise pédagogique, linguistique, interculturelle). Des focus groupes avec des enseignants du secondaire pour échanger, explorer, analyser et penser certains effets du plurilinguisme sur la posture de l’enseignant de langues viseront à compléter, affiner ou infirmer les réflexions de l’exploration autoethnographique.

The genesis of this paper lies in my own metalinguistic awareness of what my practice of plurilingualism has brought to my pedagogical and intercultural expertise. It questions the links between plurilingual competence, (meta)linguistical awareness and language (in)security through the plurilingual teacher identity and the experience of plurilingualism in classroom practice. My initial reflections draw on my story as a teacher who is bilingual from birth and who teaches her two languages; these are supported by literature and will serve as guidelines for the questions to the cohort of teachers I will interview to explore the effect of plurilingualism on teachers.

Teacher Beliefs Towards Innovative Practices in Language Education

This presentation discusses research-informed language teacher development, reporting on the conceptualization, methodology and initial findings of a multi-year, Canada-wide, SSHRC-funded study: Advancing Agency in Language Education (AALE). AALE involves language teacher participants, examining beliefs and situated practices in English, French and German language education across Ontario, Quebec and Alberta with the goal of developing curricular innovation relevant for today’s language learners. The AALE project emerged from findings of the Linguistic and Cultural Diversity Reinvented (LINCDIRE) project that defined an innovative pedagogical framework embedding an action-oriented, technology-mediated, and plurilingual approach (Piccardo et al. 2022). The AALE study follows a mixed methods and design-based research methodology. We will discuss findings on the initial phase of this research examining teacher beliefs, knowledge, and situated practices to understand the way teachers make sense of their practices; the contextually mediated nature of teacher knowledge; and how this informs contextually-relevant professional development. Data collected in this phase used a combination of focus groups, written and oral teacher reflections combined with Q-methodology (Irie et al., 2018; Lundberg et al., 2020), a research method used to investigate participant subjectivities through a forced sorting technique to generate an in-depth understanding of teacher beliefs towards these innovative practices. Initial findings reveal teachers’ enthusiasm for innovative, authentic, plurilingual, and technology-mediated practices, while highlighting concerns about actualizing such practices, including teacher and learner role redefinition, the need to negotiate agency, and the challenges of overcoming curricular and pedagogical constraints. Finally, we highlight research and pedagogical implications for language teacher education, sharing an envisioned model of collaborative teacher development.

Cette présentation porte sur la conceptualisation, la méthodologie et les premiers résultats d'une étude pluriannuelle pancanadienne financée par le CRSH : Advancing Agency in Language Education (AALE). La recherche examine les croyances et les pratiques courantes de professeurs d’anglais, de français et d'allemand en Ontario, au Québec et en Alberta, dans le but de développer des innovations curriculaires pertinentes pour les apprenants de langues d'aujourd'hui. Les premiers résultats révèlent l'enthousiasme des enseignants pour les pratiques innovantes, authentiques, plurilingues et médiatisées par la technologie, tout en soulignant les préoccupations liées à la mise en œuvre de ces pratiques, notamment la redéfinition du rôle de l'enseignant et de l'apprenant, la nécessité de négocier l’agentivité et les défis liés au dépassement des contraintes curriculaires et pédagogiques.

Plurilingualism and Pedagogy: Creating a graduate course at the University of Iceland

Plurilingualism is linked to education, achievement, and well-being. In Icelandic educational settings on all levels, however, neo-conservative and neo-liberal ideologies meet social justice perspectives, and their dialectics reflects in language and education policies, research, and practices of teachers, teacher educators, and other gate-keepers. In this presentation, action research methodology is used to discuss the construction, structure, and theoretical underpinnings of a graduate university course MAL103 Plurilingualism and pedagogy. The course was developed and taught for the first time in 2023 as part of the newly created specialization School for All at the School of Education of the University of Iceland. The aims of the course are that student teachers become familiar with ways to evaluate and use the linguistic and cultural resources of students and that they can apply teaching methods based on the linguistic resources of multilingual students to promote their learning. The theories underlying the course content and the teaching approach are intercultural and plurilingual education, social constructivism, and universal design of learning. The questions to be answered by the current action research are twofold. Firstly, what course content and pedagogy will best mediate student teachers´ acquisition of the course competence criteria? Secondly, what pedagogy will result in student teachers´ long-term commitment to positive, professional, and efficient utilization of students´ linguistic repertoires in schools? Students´ reflective essays showed that new knowledge about building upon children´s linguistic repertoires fit well with their existing positive values about inclusive education, yet the specific knowledge and skills about language were dearly needed.

V prezentaci je metodika akčního výzkumu použita k diskusi o vytvoření, struktuře a teoretických základech univerzitního kurzu MAL103 Vícejazyčnost a pedagogika na Pedagogické fakultě Univerzity Islandu. Cílem kurzu je, aby se studenti učitelství seznámili se způsoby hodnocení a využívání jazykových a kulturních zdrojů studentů a s aplikací odpovídajících vyučovacích metod. Kurz vychází z teorií interkulturního a vícejazyčného vzdělávání, sociálního konstruktivismu a univerzálního designu učení. Cílem výzkumu je zodpovědět, jaká náplň kurzu a pedagogické přístupy nejlépe zprostředkují studentům učitelství osvojení kompetenčních kritérií kurzu a následné dlouhodobé využívání jazykových repertoárů studentů ve školách.

L'approche épistémologique qui sous-tend les pratiques didactiques dans l'enseignement-apprentissage du FLE en Région Bruxelles-Capitale auprès d'adultes plurilingues en contexte migratoire et multilingue relève d'une approche fonctionnelle et pragmatiste. Le cadre institutionnel d'apprentissage des langues pour les adultes en Belgique francophone est celui de la promotion sociale, c'est-à-dire à visée d'intégration et d'insertion socio-professionnelle, dont les impératifs négligent la pluralité des singularités et laissent peu de place à l'accidentel et à l'"inutile".

Dans un contexte multilingue d’enseignement-apprentissage des langues, travailler sur le développement d'une conscience méta(trans)linguistique et ontologique permet-il de donner des clés de compréhension sur les conditions et modalités d’émergence d'une identité plurilingue “complexe” — dans le sens que donne à ce terme Edgar Morin? Cette enquête cherche à discerner comment l’adulte plurilingue pense et comprend la question de l’existence en langue. Ce questionnement en s’inscrivant dans la conception herméneutique de la langue de Gadamer et de Ricoeur aborde la dimension interculturelle de la langue sous un angle plus philosophique que sociolinguistique.

Le dispositif à visée philosophique proposé dans le cadre de cette recherche s’articule autour de mises en situation à partir d’intraduisibles (Cassin), d’espaces d’écriture de soi en langue sur les langues et d’ateliers de communauté de recherche philosophique (Lipman). L'objectif est de travailler sur la formation d'un commun en cours de langues, un commun "qui n'est pas soi mais la relation d'un soi à un autre" selon Rancières. En ce sens, cette approche pourrait faire écho à la notion de Bildung en mettant en lumière la dimension potentiellement transformative de l’éducation en langues.

In a multilingual context of language teaching and learning, can one provide scientific insights into the conditions of possibility for the development of a "complex" plurilingual identity by proposing a framework that prompts metacognition on languages, explores the Weltansicht of the languages involved, and questions the relationship to otherness and diversity through languages?

This inquiry, rooted in the hermeneutic conception of language by Gadamer and Ricoeur, approaches interculturality from a philosophical perspective on language. By adopting a phenomenological epistemological stance, this investigation seeks to discern how the plurilingual adult thinks and understands the question of "existence in language" based on their own experiential knowledge.

Une approche plurilingue d’entrevues semi-dirigées en contexte luxembourgeois

Le Luxembourg a trois langues officielles : luxembourgeois, français et allemand. Caractérisées par des fonctions distinctes, ces trois langues connaissent actuellement une renégociation de leurs rôles respectifs, alors que d’autres langues, témoins d’une forte proportion de résident·e·s d’origine étrangère au pays, gagnent en importance. Il s’opère ainsi une diversification des profils linguistiques dans un contexte déjà caractérisé par le plurilinguisme (Fehlen/Heinz 2016). Comme le montrent des études quantitatives, ces changements suivent une différence générationnelle (Fehlen et al. 2023, 20−24). Cependant, peu de données qualitatives portent sur la pratique plurilingue individuelle, et aucune étude n’aborde pour l’instant une tranche d’âge précise. Dans ce contexte, nous menons un projet de recherche doctorale axée sur les préférences langagières d’adultes de 25 à 30 ans résidant à Luxembourg-ville et sur la dimension identitaire de leurs pratiques plurilingues.

Cette proposition porte sur des entretiens pilotes prévus pour février-mars 2024, dont l’objectif est de tester un protocole d’entrevue plurilingue impliquant le recours à des enregistrements en cinq langues (français, luxembourgeois, anglais, portugais, allemand). La présentation de la méthodologie translangagière mise à l’essai et des particularités du contexte d’entrevue (Helfferich 2014) sera suivie d’une analyse qualitative des effets des stimuli sonores, tant sur le plan discursif qu’en tant qu’éventuels déclencheurs d’alternance codique (Krier 1992; Eckert 2018, 24). Le corpus étant le fruit d’une construction discursive (Pavlenko 2007), nous tenterons de déterminer s’il y a congruence entre la réflexivité sur le plurilinguisme dans le discours explicite de chaque participant·e et leurs réactions implicites à un contexte d’entrevue plurilingue.

Luxembourg has three official languages: Luxembourgish, French, and German, but given its high proportion of foreign residents, other languages are also gaining importance, with generational differences shown in quantitative studies. Within my doctoral research project concerning the language preferences of adults aged 25−30 living in Luxembourg City, pilot interviews have been scheduled for early 2024 to test a plurilingual interview protocol involving recordings in five languages. Considering the semi-structured interviews as discursive constructions, qualitative assessment will be attempted to see whether there is congruence between each participant’s explicit reflections about plurilingualism and their implicit reactions to a plurilingual interview setting.

Une approche translinguistique des représentations linguistiques : l’impact du plurilinguisme sur les représentations linguistiques des Bruxelloises et Bruxellois.

Les représentations linguistiques (RL) — représentations relatives aux langues-cultures et à leurs locuteurs, ont acquis au cours des vingt dernières années une place centrale dans la recherche en didactique des langues-cultures (DLC). Nous savons aujourd’hui que les représentations entretiennent un lien complexe avec les processus d’apprentissage, qu’elles contribuent à fortifier ou à ralentir. Dès lors, un nombre croissant de projets de recherche s’emploient à identifier et analyser les RL des apprenants et non-apprenants de langues, à la fois pour comprendre les dynamiques à l’œuvre durant l’utilisation et l’enseignement-apprentissage des langues, et pour mettre en place des stratégies didactiques favorisant l’acquisition.

Dans la « petite ville mondiale » de Bruxelles, où cohabitent plus d’une centaine de langues, les RL et leur développement sont inévitablement influencés par la forte diversité linguistique en présence. L’importante variété de statut et de visibilité entre les langues, leurs sphères d’utilisation, leur degré de maîtrise, sont autant de caractéristiques rendant le terrain bruxellois particulièrement favorable à une approche translinguistique de l’étude des RL. Ce type d’approche, très peu exploité jusqu’à présent—la majorité des recherches concernant les RL se limitant à une langue, permet une compréhension approfondie et fondamentale des processus qui façonnent les RL, puis qu’il remet le contexte sociolinguistique et les notions de compétences plurilingue et pluriculturelle au centre de la recherche.

Ma proposition d’intervention concerne une des multiples facettes déployées par cette approche translinguistique des représentations. Grâce à l’analyse des résultats d’une enquête menée à Bruxelles concernant une sélection de 15 langues, je tenterai de répondre à la question suivante : comment le plurilinguisme affecte-t-il le développement des RL ? Observe-t-on une variété dans l’homogénéité et dans les thèmes représentationnels en fonction du degré de plurilinguisme des individus ? Si oui, laquelle ? Enfin, et surtout : que retenir de ces observations pour la DLC ?

The representations we share about languages and their speakers significantly impact language learning processes. In Brussels' highly multilingual context, these representations and their development are influenced by linguistic diversity in many ways, one of them being the very plurilingual nature of the population. How does plurilingualism impact the development of linguistic representations ? Exploring this questions throught the results of a study on 15 languages in Brussels, this presentation aims to contribute to a deeper understading of what and how linguistic representations are shaped.

Plurilingual Approach in Prompt Adaptation of Ukrainians within European Union

This paper explores the significance of a plurilingual approach in facilitating the prompt adaptation of Ukrainians within the European Union, particularly focusing on sociocultural and linguacultural adaptation processes among individuals migrating to various European countries. With a considerable influx of Ukrainians relocating to host European nations, many find themselves in unfamiliar linguistic and cultural landscapes, necessitating rapid adaptation.

The paper highlights the necessity for Ukrainians to embark on the journey of cultural and linguistic adaptation upon arrival in European Union countries. Specifically, we emphasize the pivotal role of plurilingual competence formation in their linguacultural adaptation. Our research aims to demonstrate that a plurilingual approach is instrumental in fostering Ukrainians' linguacultural adaptation within host cultures while concurrently preserving their Ukrainian identity and heritage.

Drawing on empirical findings, this publication provides insights into the effectiveness of the plurilingual approach in facilitating Ukrainians' adaptation processes. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of linguistic and cultural support mechanisms, particularly in the context of the EU's NextGenerationEU initiative, as evidenced by our research conducted under the project No. 09I03-03-V01-00148, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan for Slovakia.

On the project Educating Heritage Language Learners

The paper represents 4EU+ mini-grants (from 2022 and 2023), it is led by experts from Charles University and focuses on streamlining and systematising the teaching of heritage language. The thematic area of the project is Educating Heritage Language Learners in Europe. First, we will present the general objective of the project and explain where the idea of the project came from. Then we will present the objectives of the project, which coincide with selected EU objectives. In this context, we will point out the facts that prevent the full and functional fulfilment of the mentioned European objectives in practice. One of the aims is to find answers to the below questions. The first question concerns school systems in Europe: How can current educational systems develop heritage language acquired outside schools? As the group of heritage language users is small compared to the users of the language of instruction, individual European countries consider this issue to be of lesser importance. For this reason, the team's goal is to find answers to the second question: Are European education systems causing an undesirable consequence: to "forget" heritage language and re-learn it as a foreign language? The presentation briefly describes the steps taken by the team, and also the difficulties the team faces in meeting the goals and in setting subsequent goals. The final phase of the contribution will be devoted to the description of the planned steps of the team looking for solutions to make plurilingualism and linguistic diversity in contemporary Europe more effective.

Příspěvek představuje dva na sebe navazující projekty malého rozsahu realizované 4EU+ minigranty (2022 a 2023). Mezinárodní tým veden odborníky z Univerzity Karlovy se zaměřuje na vzdělávání ve zděděném jazyce v Evropě, dále na zefektivnění a systematizaci výuky zděděných jazyků v Evropě. Nejprve představíme obecný cíl projektu a vysvětlíme základní motivace k podání projektu. Prezentace stručně informuje nejen o realizovaných krocích týmu, ale i o obtížích, kterým tým čelí při plnění cílů a při stanovování následných cílů. Závěrečná fáze příspěvku bude věnována přípravám návazných projektů, jejichž předmětem bude plurilingvismus, zděděné jazyky a jazyková diverzita v současné Evropě.

E-Tandem Programme in the Context of a European Alliance: Presenting the Exchange Programme within the EDUC Alliance.

EDUC – European Digital UniveCity – is a consortium of 8 universities from France, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Norway, Czech Republic, and Spain. As a result of the European Universities Initiatives (EUI) established in 2019, EDUC is the perfect arena to promote multilingualism among its partners. Language competencies are at the heart of building the European Education Area. They are indispensable for students, researchers, and staff mobility and to build a space of cooperation and mutual understanding across European borders. The European Union defines multilingualism as “the ability of societies, institutions, groups and individuals to engage, on a regular basis, with more than one language in their day-to-day lives”.

With this purpose, we will present the programme that we have implemented to promote language exchange in EDUC-alliance. First, we will discuss the theoretic base for this project, anchored in social constructivism as a learning theory. Social constructivism understands that the process of sharing knowledge creates a collaborative form of learning based on interaction and discussion. With this belief, we bring together employees from different European universities to collaborate, increasing their capacity for communication in a foreign language. We will present the start of this programme and the challenges and solutions that we have created to implement a digital language exchange between the partners.

EDUC - European Digital UniveCity est une alliance de huit universités de sept différents pays : France, Allemagne, Italie, Hongrie, Norvège, République Tchèque et Espagne. Suite aux initiatives des Universités Européennes (IUE) établies en 2019, EDUC constitue l'arène parfaite pour promouvoir le multilinguisme parmi ses partenaires. Les compétences linguistiques sont au cœur de la construction d’ un espace européen d’éducation. Celles-là sont indispensables pour la mobilité des étudiants, des chercheurs et du personnel, tout comme pour construire un espace de coopération et de compréhension mutuelle au-delà des frontières européennes. L'Union européenne définit le multilinguisme comme "la capacité des sociétés, des institutions, des groupes et des individus à s'engager, de manière régulière, avec plus d'une langue dans leur vie quotidienne". Dans ce but, nous présenterons le programme que nous avons mis en œuvre pour promouvoir l'échange linguistique au sein de l'alliance EDUC. Tout d'abord, nous discuterons la base théorique de ce projet, ancrée dans le constructivisme social en tant que théorie d’apprentissage. Le constructivisme social comprend que le processus de partage des connaissances crée une forme d'apprentissage collaboratif basée sur l'interaction et la discussion. Forts de cette conviction, nous réunissons des employés de différentes universités européennes pour collaborer, développant ainsi leur capacité de communication dans une langue étrangère. Nous présenterons le début de ce programme ainsi que les défis et solutions que nous avons créés pour mettre en œuvre un échange linguistique entre les partenaires.

Pluricultural Approaches in Language Education: Sharing Insights from the EPSULA Project

This paper focuses on the often overlooked dimension of pluricultural approaches in language education, a concept introduced more than two decades ago. Despite its longevity, pluriculturalism, closely intertwined with plurilingualism, still grapples with challenges in its full integration into educational systems (cfr. Chabert Ull). Our research, intricately connected to the MU Language Centre's EPSULA project, explores the potential application of project outcomes in language teaching through pluricultural methodologies.

The EPSULA Project endeavours to empower local indigenous communities to safeguard their cultural heritage and revitalize their endangered languages, often on the brink of disappearance. Equally important is to contribute to mapping cultural diversity in remote and socially excluded areas, while helping to raise awareness among the majority society about these communities and thus develop cultural awareness.

Central to our investigation is the EPSULA Compendium, comprising unique study materials featuring authentic recordings from indigenous communities in Latin America. These recordings, documenting tangible and intangible cultural heritage, serve as a valuable resource for comprehending the distinct cultures of endangered indigenous languages reliant on oral traditions. Our investigation delves into the utilization of multilingual subtitles in English, Spanish and Czech, with indigenous speakers, providing an insightful platform for the analysis of speech and discourse, as well as nonverbal communication linked to cultural patterns (cfr. Streeck, 2017).

In today's interconnected world, fostering cultural awareness is not merely necessary but imperative. This paper addresses the urgent need to enhance pluricultural competences in contemporary education. The EPSULA project stands as an illustrative case, demonstrating the potential impact of pluricultural approaches in sensitizing individuals to diverse cultural expressions and transmission patterns.

Aunque el pluriculturalismo, vinculado al plurilingüismo, es esencial, enfrenta desafíos en su integración en sistemas educativos (cfr. Chabert Ull). Nuestra investigación, ligada al proyecto EPSULA coordinado por la Universidad Masaryk, explora el potencial de las metodologías pluriculturales aplicada en el uso del Compendio de EPSULA, con grabaciones auténticas, realizadas en comunidades indígenas en América Latina. Se trata de material de estudio valioso para entender culturas originarias de lenguas en peligro. La investigación profundiza en el uso de subtítulos multilingües en inglés, español y checo, que acompañas las grabaciones brindando una plataforma única para el análisis del habla, discurso y comunicación no verbal vinculada a patrones culturales (cfr. Streek, 2017).

Mediation und das plurilinguale Repertoire der Lernenden

Mediation zwischen zwei oder mehr Fremdsprachen ist ein Prozess, der sich alltäglich in der heutigen plurilingualen und plurikulturellen Gesellschaft abspielt. Der Europarat reflektiert diese Tatsache und setzt mit der Herausgabe des Begleitbandes zum GeR (CoE, 2020) bzw. mit der detaillierten Ausarbeitung von Skalen und Deskriptoren für einzelne Mediationsaktivitäten ein klares Zeichen, dass es erwünscht ist, Mediation zum festen Bestandteil des Fremdsprachenunterrichts auf allen Niveaustufen zu machen.

Die Mediationskompetenz, wie sie im Begleitband zum GeR von 2020 verstanden wird, baut auf dem plurilingualen und plurikulturellen Repertoire des Lernenden auf. Mit anderen Worten: Interlinguale Mediation ist ohne plurilinguale sowie plurikulturelle Kompetenz nicht realisierbar und umgekehrt ist es durch Mediationsaufgaben und -aktivitäten möglich, diese Kompetenzen zu entwickeln.

Im Rahmen der mündlichen Präsentation wird der Zusammenhang zwischen Plurilinguismus und Mediation sowie deren Synergie näher erläutert. In der Einführung wird skizziert, welche pädagogischen und mehrsprachigkeitsdidaktischen Konzepte sich im aktuellen Konzept der Mediation (CoE, 2020) widerspiegeln. Anschließend wird gezeigt, welche Rolle die plurilinguale und plurikulturelle Kompetenz beim Mediationsprozess spielt und nicht zuletzt wird anhand von exemplarischen Aufgaben illustriert, wie das plurilinguale und plurikulturelle Repertoire der Lernenden durch Mediation aufgebaut und ausgeweitet werden kann und wie ihre „multilanguage (learning) awareness“ (Nied Curcio/Katelhön 2020: 149) geschult werden kann.

Mediation between two or more foreign languages is a process that takes place every day in today's plurilingual and pluricultural society. The Council of Europe reflects this fact and, with the CEFR-Companion Volume (CoE, 2020) and the detailed development of scales and descriptors for individual mediation activities, is sending a clear signal that it is desirable to make mediation an integral part of foreign language teaching at all levels.

Mediation competence, as it is understood in Companion Volume, builds on the learner's plurilingual and pluricultural repertoire. In other words: Interlingual mediation cannot be realised without plurilingual as well as pluricultural competence and, conversely, it is possible to develop these competences through mediation tasks and activities.

In the oral presentation, the connection between plurilinguism and mediation and their synergy will be explained in more detail. The introduction will outline which pedagogical and multilingual didactic concepts are reflected in the current concept of mediation (CoE, 2020). The role of plurilingual and pluricultural competence in the mediation process is then shown and, last but not least, exemplary tasks are used to illustrate how learners' plurilingual and pluricultural repertoire can be built up and expanded through mediation and how their "multilanguage (learning) awareness" (Nied Curcio/Katelhön 2020: 149) can be trained.

Reflexive Practice in Learning an Additional Language: Navigating Autonomy in Higher Education

In alignment with their European counterparts, Czech higher education institutions offer diverse language courses to cultivate a rich language-learning environment. Complementing traditional instruction, innovative approaches, such as tandem courses – where students collaborate to enhance proficiency in a target language (Vassallo & Telles, 2011) – have been introduced. This research explores participants' reflexive practice during an autonomous language tandem course. The study examined two distinct learner groups: Czech students learning a language other than English (LOTE) (N=7) and international students learning Czech (N=8), all acquiring the target language as an additional language (L4+). By exploring personal reflections on learning an additional language, the study investigated participants' metalinguistic awareness of interactions within their language repertoires (Thompson, 2020), while forming plurilingual identity. Data collection involved written course diaries that learners maintained throughout the semester and three questionnaires. Qualitative data analysis revealed how learners leveraged their multilingual backgrounds and negotiated linguistic challenges while acquiring an additional language. The study emphasizes the role of reflexive practice, cross-cultural and metalinguistic awareness (Jessner, 2008), and language pair dynamics in shaping plurilingual identities, highlighting the social dimension of language learning (Council of Europe, 2018). This research contributes to a deeper understanding of plurilingualism in language learning within diverse higher education contexts, offering implications for plurilingual didactics (Piccardo et al., 2022).

Tradiční jazykovou výuku na vysokých školách mohou doplnit tzv. tandemové kurzy, kde studenti v párech vzájemně spolupracují na zdokonalení dovedností v cílovém jazyce (Vassallo & Telles, 2011). Studie zkoumá reflexe učebního procesu mezi účastníky autonomního tandemového jazykového kurzu, kteří se učili cílový jazyk jako další jazyk (L4+). Kvalitativní analýza deníkových záznamů a dotazníků odhalila vliv vícejazyčné zkušenosti a metalingvistického povědomí (Jessner, 2008) v procesu formování vícejazyčné identity. Výsledky mimo jiné zdůrazňují roli reflexivní praxe, mezikulturního povědomí a dynamiky jazykových párů, s důrazem na sociální dimenzi učení se jazyku (Council of Europe, 2018).

The importance of plurilingualism from the perspective of medical students / Důležitost plurilingvismu pro studenty lékařské fakulty

Jazykové centrum LF UP se snaží svou nabídkou reflektovat praktické jazykové potřeby studentů medicíny. V posledních letech se, kromě angličtiny, stále více zaměřuje na výuku jazyků vnímaných v kontextu lékařského prostředí jako minoritní, tj. němčinu, portugalštinu a italštinu. Rozšíření nabízených jazyků je ze strany LF vyvoláno snahou motivovat studenty k zahraničním výjezdům, neboť se opakovaně prokazuje, že v jejich rámci je základní znalost jiného jazyka než angličtiny značnou devízou nejen při komunikaci s pacienty, ale i v integraci do studentské komunity a společnosti celkově. Na druhou stranu však tento krok může mít nežádoucí vliv na problematiku odlivu mozků ze středoevropských zemí dokumentovaného již nyní statistikami České lékařské komory dokládajícími odchod až 20 % promovaných lékařů ročně.

Považujeme za žádoucí zjistit, jaká je skutečná motivace studentů přidat k povinné angličtině ještě další volitelný jazyk a zda koreluje s důvody, pro které LF jazyky nabízí. Jsou skutečně vedeni touhou vyjet na zahraniční stáž, nebo spíše potřebou získat povinně-volitelné kredity, či se jedná o pouhý zájem o studovaný jazyk? Nebo je jejich motivace pragmatičtější a souvisí s plánováním budoucí kariéry? Vzhledem k tomu, že Rada Evropy již od r. 1982 propaguje koncept vícejazyčnosti, kdy rozvoj plurilingvismu představuje jeden z hlavních jazykových cílů EU pro 21. století, nabízí se otázka, do jaké míry studenti nejazykových oborů jako je medicína tento trend vnímají a chápou tudíž plurilingvismus jako výhodu při studiu či v rámci své budoucí profese. Zodpovědět na tyto otázky bude hlavním cílem našeho příspěvku, který je založený na anonymním dotazníkovém šetření kvantitativního typu.

The paper deals with the role of language education at the Faculty of Medicine at Palacký University. Language Center of the faculty offers a wide range of languages, either as compulsory subjects or options, including languages of minor importance in the context of medical studies like Italian or Portuguese. Hence the question is what motivates a medical student to include foreign language(s) in their study plan? Is their main motivation Erasmus mobility, working abroad or do they simply attach importance to plurilingualism? We will try to base answers to these questions on questionnaires filled in by the students of language courses.
